Province of the Americas - Annual Retreat

FCJ Christian Life - Calgary, Alberta Canada - July 2005

Icon of the Trinity.

In the last week of July 2005, a retreat on the theme ‘Dancing with our Three-Person’d God ’was held for FCJ Sisters and FCJ Companions in Mission at the FCJ Centre in Calgary.

The retreat was planned and coordinated by Ita Connery, fcJ, with the help of two of the local Companions in Mission, Joyce Hildebrand and Mary Lou Flaherty prepared by different FCJ volunteers.

Retreatants were invited to enter into the story of Sarah and Abraham as they are visited by the three angels while resting under the oak of Mamre.

Time for solitude. To take into account the differing spiritual needs of the retreatants, provision was made for spiritual direction, centering prayer, and daily short talks on the themes arising from the Genesis story.

Afternoon optional‘prayer-shops’ explored the use of art and other creative expressions as tools for prayer. The atmosphere of silence, the experience of daily Eucharist and the evening Ignatian Awareness Examen provided opportunity for sharing insights and the fruits of the day in creative rituals prepared by different FCJ volunteers.

The wonderful gifts and creative talents of FCJs were evident in the talks, the sharing of creativity and the freedom of choice given to be participants to be present or not.

This retreat brought the Province together at a profound level, uniting FCJs and Companions in an atmosphere of freedom, encouraging us to be open to new ways of ‘finding God in all things’ and to have ‘infinite respect’ for differences.
