Sr. Cecily fcJ receives an Award for her Contribution to Education

Catholic Schools Week in the USA — January 26 - 30, 2009

January 26 -30 was Catholic Schools Week in the USA, a week of celebration for students, faculty and parents.  In recent years it has become the custom to honor those people who have made a significant contribution to a particular school.

Here at St. Philomena School, they have chosen Sr. Cecily and also Jim and Corinne Murphy whose large family attended St. Philomena and who were so generous in serving and supporting the school.

Sr. Cecily receives award from the Principal, Donna Bettincourt Glavin; Sr. Cecily with award sitting with Sheila Buckley who received the award on behalf of her parents.

Cecily was one of the first teachers at the school, in fact joined the staff in the second year of its existence.  In those days there were far fewer students than now and the main school building was St. Joseph's, a house that you see as you enter the grounds.

Today, we have a very attractive campus and an enrolment of close to 500 students drawn from a wide area around Portsmouth.  This very fine school has developed considerably on the strong foundation established in the early fifties when there were only seven students and four FCJs in the first year.

Cecily, together with other FCJs, played a very significant role in those early days when she taught a combined Grades 3 and 4 class.  She was delighted to have been chosen for the honor of receiving the "St. Philomena School Special Recognition Award" for 2009.  She received the award at the end of the School Mass on January 26.  Some of her family joined her and she also invited Jacqui, who has worked at the convent for many years, and a few other friends.  Sr. Elizabeth and I also accompanied her.  Sadly, the other FCJs in the area were not able to be present because of ministry commitments.

A reception followed the awards ceremony.

We all join with the FCJ Sisters in Portsmouth in congratulating Cecily on her award.
