Solidarity with Southern Sudan

Sisters Katherine Mary and Susan attended the General Assembly for Solidarity with Southern Sudan (SSS) in Rome from 30-31 October along with 40 other general superiors or their delegates and the organizing committee.  Only eighteen months after its inception, much work has already been done in initiating and progressively developing teacher training in Malakal and Rimenze, health training in Wau and a central coordinating office in Juba.

By the end of 2008, nineteen religious will be present and active in Southern Sudan.  From 3-11 December they will participate in an Orientation Seminar in Juba where they will look at the history, present political reality, church, peace-building, education and healthcare in Southern Sudan.  They also hope to spend four days in working through other issues and concerns with the help of a facilitator.  Let us continue to pray for this challenging mission initiated by the UISG/USG in collaboration with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Sudan.

Missioning Ceremony for Sisters Margaret and Eliabeth. In Malakal the community comprises:  Ninet D’Costa, FMA; Barbara Paleczny, SSND; Margaret Sheehan, FCJ; and Betty Ryan, FCJ. They are residing in temporary accommodation until a house is ready in late January.

Stella Maris and Central Communities participated in a beautiful missioning prayer service for Margaret Sheehan and Betty Ryan on 1st September.  Margaret flew to Nairobi on the 2nd and will travel to Southern Sudan on the 21st.  Betty Ryan will travel sometime in November.

Thel four sisters in Malakai will form community and will be involved in teacher training in English.  Recent research has found that Sudan has the lowest literacy rate in the world (85 percent) and about half of all teachers have not received any professional training.

We wish Margaret and Betty God’s blessings as they move into a new area of the Society’s mission.  Let us pray too for all of those participating in this Project.
