Celebrating Marie Madeleine - Calgary, Alberta, Canada - April 5, 2008

The three communities in Calgary gathered at 22nd Avenue, together with several Companions in Mission, Simona (a nurse from Romania who spends her days off with us), Alma (mother of Mary Lou, one of our Companions in Mission) for Eucharist and a potluck supper.

Father Rupert MacLellan, a great friend of the FCJs, presided at the liturgy; Ita had prepared booklets and she and Cecilia led the music. After communion each one received the booklet 'Reflections' and we read aloud the reflection on Thirsting.

Symbolic tree planting. After the final hymn we gathered on and near the deck where we helped plant a miniature tree which symbolized the tree-planting which would take place later in the Spring.

We enjoyed a copious and varied pot-luck dinner as we drank a toast to Marie Madeleine and to the next 125 years.

Other activities marked the occasion as each group marked the occasion:

Honouring Marie Madeleine in SHC chapel.Ita prepared a Sacred Space around the picture of Marie Madeleine in the SHC/FCJ Centre Chapel. Two dozen beautiful peach-colored roses, the gift of a friend of the community, adorned this little shrine.

On the morning of April 5th, the preparation group of CiMs met for their monthly session. They gathered in Chapel for a special prayer and later toasted Marie Madeleine with sparkling apple cider and birthday cake.

On Sunday the community at Sacred Heart Convent continued the celebration using the same prayer-service which Ita had prepared for the Companions in Mission. This was followed immediately by a slide presentation prepared by of the FCJ Pilgrimage to the places made sacred to us by their connections with FCJ House community.Marie Madeleine.
