Sisters Agnes Samosir and Kathleen Mary Ride honoured by the students.Founder's Day 2007, Benalla, Australia

August 15, 2007

Founder's Day 2007 was held at FCJ College, Benalla, on August 15, 2007. During the Eucharist specially planned for the occasion, Sr. Kathleen Mary Ride's Golden Jubilee was celebrated.

Sr. Agnes Samosir, fcJ, who was visiting from Indonesia, spoke to the students:

When I was a teenager… about your age now… I had a dream… I wanted to help the poor… I wanted to go anywhere in the world to do this, especially to Africa, China … Vietnam.

This is one of the reasons why I entered the Faithful Companions of Jesus. The first FCJ I met was Sr. Barbara, who was once the Principal of FCJ College Benalla and actually Sr. Barbara was the first FCJ to come to Indonesia.

In many ways my dream has come true! As you see in the photos on the screen … FCJ Sisters in Indonesia share their companionship ... working with and for those who are poor in education, materially and spiritually.

The majority of people in Indonesia are still poor. Lots of young people… children cannot go to school because of poverty or natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis and floods.

Some of the fcJ sisters work in the school and university. It is not difficult to meet students who are not able to eat 3x a day or who can only eat rice and salty fish. Offering scholarships is a great help for them.

Many children and young mothers die because of lack of medicine, poor nutrition and because they cannot afford to go to hospital. Therefore we work with and for women. We offer them some training … empowering women to make a better life for their families. We teach them income generating projects.

As you see on the screen the FCJ Sisters responded quickly to the urgent need of the survivors of the earthquake last year as well as the tsunami in Aceh in 2004.

At this time, I would like to thank you all… for your generosity and solidarity… for sending us donations to help people who are in need.

I am very grateful to be here to see you face to face. It is like the Gospel reading we heard before about Mary’s visit to Elizabeth . These courageous women say “Yes” to God’s call to give birth to John… and to Jesus… to give birth to Justice, Peace and Love.

Thank you for your “Yes” to share your solidarity… generosity and companionship… so that together somehow we bring peace, justice and love to people, especially the poor.

I hope and pray that one day, some of you, in turn, are able to come and visit us in the Philippines, Indonesia, Bolivia or Mexico and become God’s hand to bring peace and to share loving companionship with others, especially those who are in need.
