LCWR and Public Prayer for Peace - August 2007

After the Consultative Meeting Katherine Mary O’Flynn, Claire Sykes and Patricia Binchy attended the Leadership conference of Women Religious held at KANSAS CITY, Mo. Aug. 1-4 The theme of the assembly was The Next Frontier: Religious Life on the Edge of Tomorrow. As the title suggests, the gathering focused on analyzing and determining the direction of religious life. A press statement about the gathering may be found by clicking here.

The assembly participants gave public witness in Kansas City at an outdoor prayer service for peace held at the World War I Memorial. They also approved a resolution to preserve and renew US wetlands and coastlands and strengthen Louisiana levees, and another resolution calling all LCWR members to participate in a rolling fast and advocacy for debt cancellation for impoverished countries.

LCWR presented its 2007 Outstanding Leadership Award to Sister Joan Chittister, OSB, a well-known author, speaker, and advocate for human rights and peace. LCWR members also elected Sister J. Lora Dambroski, OSF, provincial minister of the US province of the Sisters of Saint Francis of the Providence of God as the conference president, and reelected Sister Jeanne Bessette, OSF as the conference secretary.

Today LCWR has approximately 1500 members who are elected leaders of their religious orders, representing approximately 67,000 Catholic sisters. The conference develops leadership, promotes collaboration within church and society, and serves as a voice for systemic change.
