Election of Mary Claire Sykes fcJ as General Superior

After much discernment and prayer—and supported by the prayer of the Society, our Companions in Mission, our family, colleagues, friends—we moved to the election itself.

Katherine Mary asks Claire if she accepts the election.After Claire was elected, Sr. Katherine Mary O'Flynn fcJ (general superior and president of the Chapter) asked Claire if she accepted the election.

After Claire's 'yes', Katherine Mary said
I, Katherine Mary O'Flynn, in the name of the Church and in the name of the capitulars (members of the Chapter), certify that Mary Claire Sykes is validly elected general superior of the Sisters Faithful Companions of Jesus.

This completes the election and the sisters individually offer an expression of their loyalty. (cf FCJ Constitutions 280)

Sr Mary Claire Sykes was elected on 24th October 2013 as General Superior of the Faithful Companions of Jesus.

Claire was born in West Hartlepool where she was educated at St Joseph’s FCJ Convent Grammar School. She entered the Society in 1963.

Claire attained her BSc(Hons) from University College Dublin, an MA in Educational Law and Administration from the University of Durham, and an MA in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, Chicago.

Much of Claire’s life has been dedicated to education. She taught in Birkenhead and was Head Teacher of Newlands School FCJ in Middlesbrough. She is currently education officer for the FCJ schools in Britain and Jersey and is a member of the Board of Directors for St John's International School in Waterloo, Belgium.

Claire has diverse experience of leadership within the FCJ Society, having served as Local Superior, Provincial Superior of the British Province for nine years and as General Assistant for five years.

I am deeply touched by the trust my sisters have placed in me. I look forward to the coming years as we work together as companions for the reign of God.   Sr Claire fcJ
