Photo of Sr. Joanna fcJ.Closing Prayer and Ritual

At the end of this page, there is a video of some portions of the closing prayer for those who are interested.

There are also two group photos.

The introduction to the closing prayer and ritual invited us to recall our prayer as the Chapter began ... the words of the hymn Gathered in the Love of Christ ... We are a Dwelling Place that Love has made ... formed to be goodness and light in the world. One line of the song was 'See what love our God has shown to us' and this closing ritual was a time for us to contemplate together the love that God has shown to us.

In the Opening Hymn 'Morning Light' (St. Louis Jesuits) we asked that 'Christ be our Light' and reminded ourselves:

You are the light of the world, O Christ, You are the city on the hill...
You are the salt of the earth, O Christ, You are the justice of the poor...

We prayed Psalm 98, a Psalm of Thanksgiving.

O sing to the Beloved a new song, for Love has done marvellous things!

Then we sang the Chapter Mantra:

Chapter Mantra music.

Moving together into the future
Yearning to be both salt and light.
Jesus Companion—Hope in our darkness,
Draw us and shape us, Heart of our hearts.

Photo of the Proclamation. The Proclamation of the Chapter Directions followed. When Katherine Mary O’Flynn and Claire Sykes had finished reading the Chapter Directions we all stood and responded 'Thanks be to God' in eleven different languages: Latin, German, Tagalog, French, Indonesian, Irish, Spanish, Myanmarese, Italian, Romanian and Thanks be to God in 11 different languages.English.

Katherine Mary read the official 'Deliberations of the Chapter' which we all signed. After signing we all received a copy of the Chapter Directions and a little box of the salt that had been in our prayer space since the Opening Prayer.

The hymn 'God’s Love Is Everlasting' (Bob Carty) followed.

Give thanks to God for God is good. God’s love is everlasting.

The Chapter Candles were lit, followed by a short scripture reading:

"I am the Light of the world,” says the Lord,
"anyone who follows me will not be walking in darkness
but will have the light of life.”
                    Jn. 8:12

You are light for the world.  A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden.
No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub;
they put it on a lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house.
       Mt. 5:14-16

The Chapter candles were given to the Provincials. The Chapter Candles were then presented to the Provincials. A Banner was given to each Province and the remaining banners were given to our new General Leadership.

We then prayed the Blessings of the Spirit (Joyce Rupp):

May the enthusiasm of Spirit leap incessantly within you and help you to live a vibrant life...
May the strength of Spirit’s love sustain your hope as you enter into the pain of our world...
May you be mindful of the Eternal Flame within you...
May you rely on this Source of Love to be your constant ally and steady guide.

This was followed by Sr. Katherine Mary O’Flynn's closing remarks, during which she thanked especially, Sr. Barbara Valuckas SSND, our facilitator during these days.

Thank you to Barbara.   Thank you to Barbara.

Katherine Mary's closing words were met with a standing ovation. At the end of her talk, Katherine Mary declared this General Chapter 2013 closed. You can read a copy of the closing talk here. The Chapter responded to Katherine Mary's words with a standing ovation.

The closing hymn was 'Love Goes On' (Bernadette Farrell).

Wherever there is love, there will be God,
living among us day by day.
Wherever there is love, there will be God.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ’s love will show us the way.
