Scripture Passages

Four Scripture Passages that speak of 'Pressing Onwards'
Contributed by Mary Rose Rawlinson fcJ

Timothy 4: 6-8
As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
cf. FCJ Constitutions 213: In view of the time and approval of their life through which those wait before being admitted among the finally professed, it is presupposed that they will be women who are spiritual and sufficiently advanced to run in the path of Christ our Lord to the extent that their bodily strength and the exterior occupations undertaken through charity and obedience allow...

Hebrews 12: 1-2
… let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame ...
cf. FCJ Constitutions 17: We must consider attentively how important it is for us, Faithful Companions of Jesus, to accept and desire with all our strength that which Jesus Christ our Lord loved and embraced.
... so ardent is our desire to be like him that, should he grant us the grace to be identified with him in his sufferings, we wish to follow him even to the Cross, and beyond.

Hebrews 10: 23-25
Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…
cf. FCJ Constitutions 5: Strong in companionship with Jesus and with each other, we work together in the service of the Church to build the body of Christ.
FCJ Constitutions 351: ... in God alone must be placed the hope that he will preserve and carry forward what he deigned to begin for his service and praise and for the aid of his people.

James 1: 2-4, 25
… whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.
cf. FCJ Constitutions 11: God asked a free heart of our foundress, to dwell always in his presence as an empty vessel ready to receive all from him, to remain undisturbed in his hands, so united to him as to be lost in him, desiring only the accomplishment of his will. We also beg the grace to accomplish God's will with fidelity and joy.

Foreword to the FCJ Constitutions (M. Breda O'Farrell fcJ)
Our lives become symbols that 'God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and God's weakness is stronger than human strength' (1 Cor. 1:25), symbols of a hope which is not deceptive 'because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.' (Rom. 5:5)
