Governance and Preparation for Elections

Part of the work of the FCJ General Chapter has been to reflect on our structures of government and their evolution to support the life and mission of the Society. Before beginning the topic of ‘governance’, some time was given to advancing the discernment about matters of greater importance for our life and ministry, a discernment vital to the future of our Society.

Your hands are messy, the effort is demanding, and it’s not yet clear what shape this will take. But this is the real work; staying in touch with the substance, feeling its resistance, and trusting that through your persistence something good is forming.

The reflection on the theme of governance marks the culmination of several years of experimentation with various organisational structures.

We appreciate the gift of our diversity and complexity. The structures of our governance may evolve differently in each part of the Society.

General Chapter  2019: Widening the Circle of Love

The task on hand is to decide definitively which structure best suits our organisational, communal and apostolic needs at this time. The ensuing discussions contributed to a deepened understanding of the unique needs and situations of each Area, and the need for creativity in taking the next steps forward. We are confident that the foundation laid these days will make for a strong yet flexible structure.

Discussions play an important part in coming to a decision.

On Tuesday afternoon, we began to prepare for the election process ahead. Expressing the qualities we would like in a General Leader, painted an impressive profile of a woman capable of leading our Society for the next six years. Of course, no one person could live up to such high expectations! Over the next few days, we will rely on the inspiration and action of the Holy Spirit, in reflection and consultation, to guide us in our choices for General Leader and three Assistants. Please join us in prayer for this intention.

We concluded the day with a beautiful Mass of the Holy Spirit.
