The day was clear and sunny as delegates to the FCJ General Chapter drove through the beautiful English countryside to the Ladywell Franciscan Retreat Centre in the town of Godalming, one and a half hours south of London. The Centre complex, of Edwardian era, is owned and run by the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood since 1956. It is also home to the FMDM Generalate, community, and their own Sisters in nursing care.
The decorated stone buildings, originally the heart of a large Estate and working farm, became a retreat centre in 1979, and more recently was restructured to allow for two dining areas, conference areas with ‘break-out rooms, a large chapel, several small chapels or prayer rooms, library, plus tea/coffee rooms for relaxation. You can take a look at the facilities on their website.
It is usual, when FCJ Sisters gather, to witness fond reunions and hear excited exchanges of news. The delegates and ex-officio members, coming from far and near (Asia, Australia, Canada, the EU, England and the USA) were eager to meet and welcome each other, and were also soon welcomed by the FMDM staff members who led them in a tour of the extensive buildings and grounds. A delicious supper and some socializing in the ‘Francis’ Room completed our arrival experience.
