FCJ Sisters and Companions in Mission participated in a charity run to raise funds for the work of CAFOD, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development and the official aid agency for the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Companions in Mission Helen writes about it.
Running is certainly not my favoured activity especially in the cold damp November days. However, running for a cause, together with others who are pushing their boundaries in order to make a difference to people who are in need takes it to another level.
Our second Silverstone RunFest on behalf of CAFOD took place on Sunday 23rd November at the world famous racing track in Northamptonshire. Our FCJ, CIM and friends team was eight strong and included seasoned Park Run specialists (Jennie and Helen R – both CiMs), a half marathon newbie – Dom (my son) and a total rookie – Rebecca who was truly magnificent in running the whole way for her first ever 5k! Additionally, we had a mother (Maria)-daughter and a mother-son combination.
Last year some of us ran through Storm Bert, so to be running in cold but sunny conditions was a treat – the camaraderie took us round those difficult bits with Jennie and the FCJs Lynne and MaryAnne setting their pace like running pros. There were some personal bests that day and the half marathon CAFOD runners had their own cheer leaders, including some from Malta, to keep them going for the last moments of their amazing endeavour. There were inspirational performances from not only our group but from so many of the Silverstone runners and additionally the ever smiling and supportive Neil from CAFOD looked after us so well whilst keeping tabs on the larger team. Overall we have raised more than £5000.
Thank you all for supporting us in prayer, sponsorship and encouragement. There is nothing like bonding through a sporting event and I think I may have another go at it next year – anyone else fancy a run?
