This term, our school community gathered for a truly historic moment: the celebration of Gumley House’s 185th Anniversary Mass, marking nearly two centuries of FCJ education, companionship, and service. Over two beautiful liturgies, celebrated by Bishop James Curry and supported by priests from across the diocese, our students and staff came together to honour the legacy that has shaped generations of young people.
Both Masses were filled with the spirit of our Feast Day and the energy of a school that has begun its Year of Excellence with purpose and pride. Every student in the school attended one of the celebrations, and the sense of unity was unmistakable. Gumley House has always been more than a school; it is a family rooted in faith, and this anniversary Mass captured that beautifully.

Bishop James offered a powerful homily, reflecting on the difference between what we want and what we need. He reminded us that the history of Gumley House – and the FCJ foundations on which it stands – continually point us towards God, guiding us to become people of courage, compassion, and integrity. His words resonated deeply with students and staff alike, grounding our celebrations in the values that have shaped us since 1841.
We were honoured to welcome a number of distinguished guests, including Sr Patricia Binchy, FCJ General Superior, and FCJ Sisters from across the Society. Their presence connected us directly to the global FCJ mission and to the legacy of Marie Madeleine, whose vision continues to inspire our work today. We were also delighted to be joined by former headteachers Mrs Kolczynska, Ms Braggs, and Sr Brenda fcJ, each of whom has played a significant role in shaping the Gumley House we know and love.
The liturgy itself was enriched by the exceptional contributions of our students. The choir sang with beauty and confidence, filling the chapel with melody and lifting the celebration to something truly special. Students from across all key stages read, served, and supported the Mass with reverence and maturity, demonstrating the very best of Gumley’s spirit.

As students left the chapel, they received a specially designed 185th Anniversary Badge – a small but meaningful reminder that they are part of a story much bigger than themselves, a story that stretches back 185 years and continues to unfold with each new generation. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this event — staff, students, clergy, Sisters, and guests. It was a day that honoured our past, celebrated our present, and looked with hope to our future.
Gumley House remains, as ever, a place of companionship, excellence, and faith.
