The FCJ General Chapter 2025 is taking place at The Franciscan Centre Ladywell, Godalming, in the south of England.
Ladywell, an Edwardian House and working farm, was purchased by the Franciscan Sisters of the Divine Motherhood in 1956 and became their Mother House. In 1979 they opened up Ladywell as a retreat centre, and in 2019 following refurbishment it reopened as the Franciscan Centre.
The Centre has extensive and beautiful grounds from landscaped garden spaces to old forest walks. A nearby Shrine to our Lady has been a place of prayer since the 7th Century and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. In more recent years the development of sustainable practices have led to the planting of a woodland, wildflower garden and installation of solar panels.
The Chapter Delegates are in accommodation across the property. They are enjoying learning more about Franciscan spirituality through the place names, rooms (Duns Scotus, San Damiano, Gubbio etc!) and beautiful artwork, as well as the prayer spaces and the newly completed Canticle Corner.
