Running Again

FCJ SIsters Ramona, Lynne and MaryAnne at the CAFOD fundraising race

Last year a group of FCJ Sisters, Companions in Mission and friends in England took part in the Silverstone Run Fest for CAFOD at the iconic Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. They are now training for the next edition! Neil Roper at CAFOD writes:

Join our team of religious sisters and friends as they run around the iconic Formula One track at Silverstone later this year.

For Sisters Lynne fcj and MaryAnne fcj, dedicated supporters of CAFOD, this year’s Silverstone 5K will be their second go at running at the British home of Formula One racing. You could be there with them at this amazing event, set in a truly iconic venue.

Sign up here: Silverstone Run Fest

You can choose between a 5k, 10k or half marathon distance as you run on the track that has seen legends like Lewis Hamilton, Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell race and win. As you run, you’ll also be raising money for CAFOD’s work around the world, partnering in God’s mission to bring life in all its fulness to all people (John 10:10).

Lynne’s support for CAFOD goes beyond the finish line-she is inspired by CAFOD’s dual approach of providing both practical aid and long-term training to build sustainable futures. Her commitment to CAFOD shines through, especially as she prepares for this year’s event:

I’m looking forward to this year’s Silverstone Run Fest because CAFOD is such a worthwhile charity and the Run Fest was good fun, a real community event and a personal challenge!

What stands out most about her journey is the spirit of community that has formed around her. I wear my CAFOD t-shirt when training and always get lots of smiles and encouragement! Reflecting on last year, Lynne continues: The event was great – a real buzz at the racetrack and great support from the CAFOD team.

For MaryAnne, the Silverstone 5K is equally meaningful, as she talks about how her training and fundraising embodies CAFOD’s values:

Joining the CAFOD Silverstone team was a bit of personal challenge. I had not yet run 5K and had only just started running using the ‘Couch to 5K’ podcasts. The fact that it was in the iconic location of Silverstone added a bit of glamour to it! Supporting CAFOD was a no-brainer. I have supported their campaigns and used their resources for many years both in school as well as in my own FCJ community. The day itself was wonderful; it was so good to meet the other runners and get to know their stories. We got wonderful support from the CAFOD staff who encouraged us and took great care of us. We had to contend with Storm Bert, got soaked to the skin and had a wonderful time!

The fact that I am not a runner and that we ran 5K in Storm Bert enabled me to get a big sympathy vote, so more funds for CAFOD’s vital work!

I will run again this year for CAFOD with a group of FCJ sisters and friends. Let’s hope the weather is kinder this year!
